Getting funded as a trader sounds complicated, but the path is straightforward once you break it into stages. In this guide we walk through each step — from choosing the right prop firm to passing the evaluation, claiming a funded allocation, and staying in the program long enough to receive payouts.
Step 1: Pick the right funding model
Not all funded trader programs are the same. Some focus on forex, others on futures or stocks. Some charge a challenge fee up front; others, like FLC, let you qualify for free. Before you sign up, compare these points:
- What markets can you trade?
- Is there leverage, and how much?
- What is the profit target and drawdown rule?
- How often are payouts processed?
- What happens if you fail the challenge?
If you want to run a long/short equity or crypto fund without leverage, FLC’s model is built for you. Learn more on the funding page.
Step 2: Learn the rules before you trade
Every prop firm has a rule book, and most failures come from traders who never read it. At FLC the key rules are simple but strict:
- Max 20% of fund equity in a single position.
- No leverage — gross exposure is capped at 100% of equity.
- Max 50% of equity in short exposure.
- Max 30% in crypto unless your mandate is crypto focused.
- You must hold at least 5 positions before claiming a funded account.
- Qualification requires at least 20 active trading days.
These limits are not obstacles. They are the same disciplines professional fund managers live by. Read the full FLC house rules before you place your first trade.
Step 3: Build a repeatable strategy
The evaluators are not looking for one lucky trade. They are looking for a process that produces positive returns while keeping losses small. Your strategy should answer three questions:
- What will you trade? Pick a universe you understand. FLC supports individual stocks and crypto.
- When will you enter? Define the setup — a catalyst, valuation level, technical pattern, or any combination you can explain.
- When will you exit? Set profit targets and stop losses before you buy.
Write these rules into your fund mandate. At FLC your mandate guides the AI Committee review and becomes part of your documented track record.
Step 4: Manage risk like a fund manager
Risk management is what separates traders who get funded from traders who blow up on day three. Three habits make the biggest difference:
- Size every position: A single trade should never be large enough to end your qualification.
- Diversify: Spread exposure across sectors, themes, and directions. FLC requires at least five positions before funding.
- Respect the trailing drawdown: Your equity cannot fall 5% from its highest point during qualification. Protect it first; profits follow.
Step 5: Trade the qualification period
At FLC you start with a free $100,000 qualification fund. Your goal is to reach a +10% return while following every risk rule for at least 20 active days. You do not need to trade every day, but the 20 active days prove your results are consistent, not accidental.
During this phase, every decision is logged. The AI Committee reviews your trades against your mandate, and your Manager Score reflects both returns and discipline. Treat the qualification as an interview for a real portfolio-manager role — because that is exactly what it is.
Step 6: Claim your funded allocation
Once you hit the target and satisfy the rules, you can apply for a funded allocation. FLC offers Starter ($10,000), Growth ($50,000), and Elite ($100,000) funded accounts. Each has an activation fee, and the funded capital stays in play while eligible profit is reviewed and paid out every 90 days.
If you fail the qualification, you can restart for $49 as many times as you need. If you fail while funded, you can buy a new funded package or apply for a risk evaluation to continue with the same account.
Step 7: Keep your seat at the table
Passing the challenge is only the beginning. Funded accounts at FLC are subject to the same risk rules, and a 5% trailing drawdown applies. Your job is to keep producing disciplined returns, follow your mandate, and avoid the behavioral mistakes that erase profits.
Stay active, track your metrics, and use the analytics tab to compare your performance against benchmarks like the S&P 500. The longer your track record, the more valuable you become — both to FLC and to any allocator who sees your public ranking.
